No Permit or DNR Approval Required for Typical Use

This product is designed as a localized prevention tool for docks and boat lifts—not a lake-wide treatment.

Because it:

  • Works only in the immediate area around the device
  • Is installed on private structures (docks, lifts, etc.)
  • Does not treat or alter the entire lake

…it does not require approval or permitting from agencies like the
Minnesota Department of Natural Resources or
Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources for typical residential use.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Dock Disk

What is the Dock Disk?

The Dock Disk™ is a patented, non-toxic device designed to repel and control zebra and quagga mussels around docks, boats, slips, and other freshwater structures.

It is a soft foam disk (about 7.5 inches in diameter) that is placed in the water to create a protective zone where mussels will not attach.

How does the Dock Disk work?

The Dock Disk works through a passive process:

  • It is suspended 3.5–4 feet below the water surface
  • The natural ebb and flow of the water activates an ionic exchange
  • This creates an environment that repels mussels from attaching

Once deployed:

  • Existing unattached mussels typically leave the area within 2–3 weeks
  • New mussels will avoid settling in the protected zone

How much area does one Dock Disk cover?

Each Dock Disk creates an effective coverage area of approximately:

  • 7–8 foot radius (14–16 ft diameter)

Example:

  • A typical 40-foot boat slip may require about 6 Dock Disks for full coverage

How long does a Dock Disk last?

  • Each disk is effective for up to 6 months
  • After that, it should be replaced to maintain protection

Is the Dock Disk safe for the environment?

 Yes. The Dock Disk is:

  • Non-toxic
  • Safe for use in any freshwater body
  • Designed to repel mussels without harming aquatic life

It is classified by the EPA as a “pesticide device,” meaning it works physically rather than through chemical discharge.

Does the Dock Disk require power or maintenance?

No.

  • No electricity or batteries required
  • No moving parts
  • Minimal maintenance beyond periodic replacement

It simply needs to be hung in the water and allowed to move naturally with currents.

Where can the Dock Disk be used?

The Dock Disk is designed for use in:

  • Boat slips and marinas
  • Residential docks
  • Boat lifts and ladders
  • Water intake systems (irrigation or industrial)

It can be used anywhere zebra or quagga mussels attach to submerged surfaces.

Does the Dock Disk eliminate zebra mussels completely?

No. The Dock Disk does not remove mussels from an entire lake.

Instead, it creates a localized “mussel-free zone” around:

  • docks
  • boats
  • infrastructure

This makes it a control and prevention tool, not a full eradication solution.

Is the Dock Disk bad for the lake, vegetation, or fish?

No. The Dock Disk is designed to be non-toxic and environmentally safe.

  • It does not release chemicals into the water
  • It does not harm fish, aquatic plants, or wildlife
  • It works through a physical/ionic process, not a biocide

Because of this, it is generally considered safe for freshwater ecosystems when used as directed.

What water conditions might negatively impact the effectiveness of the Dock Disk?

 Certain conditions can reduce effectiveness:

  • Stagnant water (little to no movement)
  • Areas with very low circulation (back bays, enclosed slips)
  • Heavy debris or algae buildup around the disk
  • Improper placement (too shallow or too deep)

The Dock Disk relies on natural water movement to activate its protective zone, so some circulation is important.

How will I know when it’s time to replace the Dock Disk?

Dock Disks are typically effective for up to 6 months.

Signs it may be time to replace:

  • You begin to see new mussel attachment in the protected area
  • The disk shows visible wear or degradation
  • It has been in use for an entire season

Most users follow a seasonal replacement schedule (e.g., spring and mid-season).

How often do I need to clean my Dock Disk?

Cleaning is minimal but recommended:

  • Inspect periodically (every few weeks during the season)
  • Clean if you notice:
    • algae buildup
    • debris accumulation
    • visible fouling

Keeping the surface clear helps maintain effectiveness.
